The poppy flower is commonly associated with Remembrance Day, also known as Armistice Day or Veterans Day in different countries. However, it is essential to note that the poppy symbolizes remembrance and honoring the military personnel who lost their lives in war generally. While Remembrance Day is a significant occasion, the poppy is a symbol used in various countries and contexts to commemorate all military personnel and veterans.
In the United States, Memorial Day is another important holiday where the poppy is often used to pay tribute to fallen soldiers. Memorial Day, observed on the last Monday of May, honors the men and women who died in military service.

So Why Poppies?
The tradition of using the red poppy as a symbol of remembrance originated from the famous World War I poem “In Flanders Fields” by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae. The poppy fields mentioned in the poem inspired the use of the flower as a symbol to honor fallen soldiers.
BY JOHN MCCRAE
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
